Historic Mill in the Heart of Green Serenity
In Lunderskov, 12 km south of Kolding, you'll find a wonderful green haven. Drabæk Mill Pond lies as a green oasis, idyllically situated in a green corridor in the middle of Lunderskov town. The landscape is shaped by moraine hills, marshlands, and meadows, which are intersected by a spring that originates at the old manor house and flows through a carp pond and into eight fish ponds. Additionally, the area boasts rich bird and wildlife, along with a diverse flora.
The area surrounding Drabæk Mill, covering 41 hectares, was protected in 1972, allowing it to remain a green oasis that exudes both tranquility and history.
The History of Denmark's Oldest Business
In 1553, Drabæk Mill was established as a royal watermill and, for over 450 years, supplied flour to the Danish Royal Family. Up until its closure in 2008, the mill provided flour to Prince Joachim, among others.
Drabæk Mill is claimed to be Denmark's oldest business, having operated under the same name since around 1100.
In 1907, Drabæk Mill burned down and was rebuilt in the form we know today—a symbol seen in the Kornkammer logo.
New Life and Space for Guests
Today, the mill house is rented out as a venue for celebrations, conferences, and events, accommodating up to 80 guests, with 7 rooms available for overnight stays. On the ground floor, there is a cozy café, where the historic setting within the protected natural area provides unique experiences for the mill’s visitors.
Drabæk Mill was closed in 2008 and stood vacant for 11 years before a local couple from Lunderskov purchased the old mill to bring it back to life. The couple quit their jobs and pursued the dream of restoring the old buildings from the early 1900s through a combination of renovation, preservation, and new construction.
Although the buildings' functions and interiors are being updated, the goal remains to retain the original 1907 appearance and preserve the historical charm of the beautiful structures. The mill house and the mill are being renovated to look as they did when first built. There are extensive plans for the renovation, which are well underway.
